Research Proposal: Impact of Adult Second Language Learning on Native English Speakers’ Grammar

This document was written to propose a potential research topic related to the field of English studies. As a linguist, the specific topic of potential research discussed was also related to the category of linguistics, integrating both subjects into one potential research topic. The research topic selected was specifically about the relation of the two subjects, suggesting that there is a correlation between learning a English and learning other languages. A subcategory of the research proposed was to consider the way that learning other languages as an adult can have a backwards effect on the adult native English speaker’s native language.

A Study of the Etymology of Words Related to Education

When completing a degree in English, it is important to study and learn about the history of the language. This document researches the etymology and historical context of some English words relating to education. The presented hypothesis that – despite English being a Germanic language – the majority of the selected words related to education would have Latin (or a Romance Language) origins as opposed to Germanic proved out to be true. This document emphasizes the importance of linguistics and the correlation of the study of languages to the study of English.

Writing with ChatGPT Assignment

This document is a two-part document about using ChatGPT in educational environments. The first part of the document is brief overview of some articles about the use of ChatGPT in education, and the second portion is example of some instructions that might be provided to students regarding the use of ChatGPT in a class. The intent is to provide some guidelines that an instructor could use – if allowing ChatGPT or other generative AI to be used in the classroom – to help students to understand how to use these types of tools ethically while still focusing on the learning intended in the class.

New Instructor Handbook

This document was written as an assignment in my Master of Education (M.Ed.) program. However, its purpose was to propose a handout to be provided to future instructors, as they complete a specific instructor course, as a guide and reminder of important elements of being an instructor. As a facilitator of this instructor program, I frequently find instructors making mistakes or coming back with questions on simple things that they were taught in the instructor program. But I proposed the written document that they could refer to when they have questions, indicating that I believe it would be extremely beneficial to these new instructors.

Differentiated Strategies for Instruction and Assessment

This document was written as an assignment for curriculum course in my Master of Education (M.Ed.) program. The intent was to develop and document strategies for evaluating and assessing the needs of students in the classroom and determine how to adjust the instruction for the various needs of the class. This is an important aspect of education to consider, as individual students have different needs, and instructors need to be able to identify where those needs are through assessments and then adjust the instruction to ensure the students are getting what they need out of the instruction.

Curriculum Evaluation

Written as the final assignment for a Master of Education (M.Ed.) program Curriculum Evaluation class, this document is an overview of the importance process of evaluating curriculum. Not only does the document discuss elements of curriculum to evaluate, it includes a discussion of how to apply curriculum evaluation as well as a personal reflection of having evaluated curriculum for real-world classes and how it could be done better.

Future-Focused Education

Written for my Master of Education (M.Ed.) program, the purpose of this document was to determine, articulate, and discuss my personal philosophy of education. It highlights the importance of focusing on the future of the students, and their ability to use the information taught in their future careers. An important element of this discussion is recognizing the relationship between instructors and students, and the importance of getting to know and understand each student as an individual in order to adapt and diversify instruction to help each student to learn and grow.
